Sharpen Each Other

on July 24, 2012

“As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.” Proverbs 27:17 NLT

My cousin, Chanteea, who invited me on this blog; yea, we go way back. Growing up, we were like two peas in a pod as the saying goes. One of my earliest memories of being around her was being at her house one summer. We must have been about eight or nine years old.

We were in the yard one day exchanging some not so nice words with a boy in the neighboring yard. We picked up rotten apples from the ground and started throwing them at him and then he threw some back at us. One apple I threw hit the boy in his head. He started to cry and we both ran in the house and hid. I remember us laughing after the fact because we couldn’t believe I actually hit him.  We had some fun, crazy times in our youth.

I have always visited back home and on this last trip about a month ago, I saw Chanteea. I was truly encouraged by her and her husband taking time out to spend time with me and my kids at the boardwalk. We had such a great time; a memorable time, just like when we were kids.

Over the course of our lives we both discovered a love of writing. We both share the desire to become published authors and leave a legacy that glorifies God. With that in mind, we have an opportunity now to share in our mutual dreams and sharpen each other as Proverbs 27:17 reminds us to do.We were both at a dull place in our writing. The state we were in was like trying to use a dull pencil without sharpening it. The pencil will not write much in that condition. That kind of pencil gets tossed aside. With a sharpener, a pencil is available to write freely and will do much more writing.

We can all use a little sharpening, no matter if we are completely dull or consider ourselves pretty sharp already. God’s desire is for us to use our knowledge and experiences to help encourage, guide, and lift one another up. Let us tap into the power God has given us to be on guard against the hindering spirits that surround us.  These ailing spirits attempt to suffocate and snuff out our work and God’s will in one blow. In conjunction with Proverbs 27:12, let us actively practice Hebrews 3:13, “But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.”

Going forward, I hope we will adopt the mentality of being friends who intentionally sharpen others. Today, make it a point to remind someone that they can do whatever they set their mind to do.
